How to Throw a Wine Tasting Get-Together

How to host a wine tasting event for your next house party.

Hosting a wine tasting at home is my favorite way to blend sophistication with a little chaos (because let’s be honest, after the third glass, things get real). A wine tasting party at home is a chance to bring people together, explore flavors, and enjoy some delicious wine. Here’s how I like to keep it fun and fabulous.

  1. Choose a Theme

I always pick a theme because it makes me look organized (spoiler: I’m super organized). Themes like “Chardonnay All Day” or “Wines for Less Than $30 That Taste Expensive,” having a focus keeps things cohesive. It will also help entice your guests to try some wine to add to their home repertoire.

2. Hide the Labels

There’s something mysterious about not knowing what you’re drinking—it levels the playing field. I cover the bottles in foil or kraft paper and let the guessing begin. Watching someone passionately argue that a $10 bottle from Trader Joe’s is from the far reaches of the Quinta do Crasto vineyard is my favorite form of entertainment.

Laying out a charcuterie board helps cleanse the palette and keep guests grazing.

3. Keep Plenty of Snacks

I’m a firm believer that snacks are absolute must for a wine tasting. I set out a spread of crackers, cheese, and random extras like spicy nuts or chocolate. If you want to have fun, have a food theme for the party— like Indian or French Charcuterie boards. Dessert charcuterie is great, but make sure there are other options available. Remember, where there’s alcohol there should be plenty of food and water.

4. Play a Guessing Game

I make things a little interesting. My guests write down their guesses on the price of the bottles of wine. The results are always hilarious. They can also guess the grape variety of each wine. Winner gets—any guesses? A bottle of wine!

5. Always Keep it Light

The best part of a wine tasting party is that it’s not about wine snobbery or flexing your knowledge. It’s about trying something new, friends, and having a good time. I’ve added ice cubes to my wine without judgement. Just as long as you’re having fun (and keeping the wine flowing), you’ll have a good time.
