Making Simple Syrup

Making simple syrup

In my blog, you will be seeing a lot of syrups made from a variety of fruits, nuts, and herbs. When added to a cocktail or mocktail, it seriously elevates any drink. But all of these syrups are based off of the most basic syrup—aka simple syrup.

Nearly all drinks have simple syrup in it in one way or another. The recipe for simple syrup, well, couldn’t be simplier. One part water and one part sugar. You can stir over heat or just give it a decent shake and voila! You’ve got simple syrup.

What is simple syrup?

Simple syrup is a liquid sweetener made by dissolving sugar into water. Why create sugar to a liquid form? Adding simple syrup allows you to seamlessly blend the sugar with your drink without having to break down the granulated sugar. These days, I always have to have a batch of simple syrup on call. Anytime I need sugar for another purpose, I reach for my simple syrup. It just blends faster and easier without leaving any unmixed sugar granules.

Why make your own simple syrup?

If you go to your local liquor store or even food store, they will most likely have bottled simple syrup. These usually cost upwards of $6+. Making simple at home is recommended. It’s much more cost effective and you probably already have sugar at home, so no extra trips.

How to make simple syrup

  1. Take one part water and one part sugar. You can use brown sugar, sugar-free sweetener, agave, or honey. If you use agave or honey I recommend using a 2 part water one part sweetener.

  2. Heat in saucepan. Stir until sugar fully dissolves.

  3. Remove from heat and let cool. Store in air-tight container in refrigerator or store in dry, cool place.
